Do self-cleaning solar panel coatings actually work?

Five-year field study of self-cleaning and anti-soiling solar panel coatings in Dubai and Kuwait

A five-year field study across Dubai, Kuwait and three other sites found anti-soiling coatings could not be distinguished from plain glass, and that uncoated glass sometimes stayed cleaner.

Self-cleaning coatings are marketed as a way to stop washing solar panels, and the largest field study on the question does not support that. Five years of exposure at Dubai, Kuwait City, Mesa, Mumbai and Sacramento found the cleanliness of anti-soiling coatings could not be told apart from plain glass, with uncoated glass ranking cleaner than three of the four coatings tested.

Why the ranking is the part worth reading

The study ranked five specimens by particle area coverage - lower is cleaner. Uncoated glass came second. Three of the four coated specimens held more dust than the bare reference, and the spread between best and worst was under a percentage point of coverage.

That is not a marginal result being spun negatively. It is the expected outcome once you separate two claims that marketing routinely merges. Coatings did improve optical performance - every coating transmitted more light than bare glass, which is the anti-reflective effect and it is real and worth paying for. What the data did not show is dust declining to stick. Those are different physics and only the first one delivered.

Cementation is the reason Gulf dust is a separate problem

In Dubai the median particle size exceeded 30 micrometres, which the authors treat as a signature of cementation: dust chemically bonded to the glass through repeated dew cycles, not merely resting on it. Palygorskite clay, more prevalent in MENA than in the Arizona desert, makes this worse, and the study also attributed increased reflectance at the Dubai site to local calcite contamination.

Once dust has cemented, surface chemistry is largely beside the point. A hydrophobic layer changes how a water droplet behaves on clean glass; it does not dissolve a mineral crust. This is why the study's practical recommendation for Dubai is to clean more often than monthly - the goal is to intervene before cementation forms, which is the same conclusion we reached from operating data in our note on пыль и загрязнение в ОАЭ.

Where coatings do show a measurable benefit

The evidence is not uniformly negative, it is conditional. A 2026 study in Scientific Reports from Selcuk University tested oleic-acid-modified alumina nanocoatings and found coated surfaces accumulated 6.9 mg/cm2 less dust in laboratory conditions, avoiding between 0.6% and 3.0% of efficiency loss, with coated mini-modules producing 0.5-0.8 W more per day in outdoor tests.

The limitation in that same paper is the one that matters here: effectiveness declined above 35 degrees Celsius and in the presence of hydrophobic pollutants. A Dubai rooftop sits above 35 degrees for a large share of the year, next to road traffic and construction. The conditions under which the coating worked are not the conditions on a UAE roof.

Позиция SOLTECH

Our position: anti-reflective coatings are a legitimate product, self-cleaning is not yet a proven one in Gulf conditions, and anyone selling the second while showing evidence for the first is trading on a confusion. We would not specify an anti-soiling coating on a UAE project today, and we would not price a maintenance contract on the assumption it works.

Where we would qualify our own scepticism: this study used glass coupons rather than operating modules, the specific coating formulations are anonymised, and coating chemistry has moved on since the samples were deployed. The authors themselves say an anti-soiling opportunity may still exist relative to earlier, predominantly hydrophobic fluoro-coatings. So the honest reading is not that self-cleaning is impossible - it is that no product has yet published the Gulf field evidence that would justify the claim, and the burden of proof sits with the seller. Until someone publishes two years of UAE data against a control, "you will never need to clean again" is a sales message rather than a specification.
