Germany has the highest electricity prices in the G20

Verivox puts German households at 35.6 euro cents per kWh, more than double the G20 average of 16.3. Over 60% of that price is tax, levy and network fee.

Germany has the highest electricity prices in the G20, at 35.6 euro cents per kilowatt-hour for households. The comparison portal Verivox published the figure on 30 August 2026, using Q2 2026 data from Global Petrol Prices covering 144 countries. The G20 average is around 16.3 cents, so German households pay more than double.

One correction worth making to how this story usually travels. Germany leads the G20, not the world. Ireland is more expensive at 42.6 cents in the same dataset. Germany did hold the global top spot in 2021 at 31.80 cents, and the fact that it no longer does while its own price has risen tells you how much other markets moved.

The price is not about generation

More than 60% of the German household electricity price consists of taxes, levies, duties and network fees, according to Verivox. The remainder covers procurement, sales, service and supplier margin. Thorsten Storck, Verivox energy expert, puts it directly: electricity production itself makes up only about a third of the household price.

That distinction matters for anyone reasoning from wholesale prices. Cheap generation does not automatically produce cheap bills, because most of a German bill never touches a power station. It also explains why the cheapest countries on the list — Cuba at 0.51 cents, Ethiopia at 0.64 — are not cheap because of technology. They are cheap because the state absorbs the cost, which is a fiscal choice rather than an energy one.

Why this is the most important number in solar economics

A rooftop system does not earn a market price. It earns whatever you would otherwise have paid your utility for the same kilowatt-hour. That makes the retail tariff, not the amount of sunshine, the dominant variable in payback — and it is why Germany, with roughly half the irradiance of the Gulf, has a mature rooftop market.

Run the comparison honestly. A German household displacing 35.6 cents earns more than twice as much per kilowatt-hour as one displacing the G20 average. A Gulf roof produces far more kilowatt-hours from the same array. The two effects work in opposite directions, and which one wins depends entirely on the local tariff and consumption profile.

For Dubai the reference points are the DEWA residential slabs: 23 fils per kWh for the first 2,000 kWh a month, then 28, 32 and 38 fils in the upper bands, plus a fuel surcharge of 6.0 fils per kWh as of July 2026. A precise euro comparison depends on the EUR/USD rate on the day, since the dirham is pegged to the dollar, so the useful reading is structural rather than a single converted number.

The German number is not a story about Germany. It is a reminder that what a rooftop kilowatt-hour is worth is set by policy and network charges, not by the panel.
