Solar hits 10% of global electricity in H1 2026

Solar supplied just over 10% of global electricity in H1 2026, up from 8.9% a year earlier. Batteries added in 2026 could shift 34% of new daily solar output.
Solar's share of global electricity passed 10% for the first time in the first half of 2026, according to analysis published by the energy think tank Ember on 12 August 2026. That is up from 8.9% in H1 2025 and 5.6% in H1 2023. Global solar generation reached 1,564 TWh, roughly double the 769 TWh of three years earlier, while total generation grew 12%.

The 34% figure needs reading carefully. It is a ceiling, not an outcome. Ember is explicit that not all batteries are used to shift solar and many are underutilised: Chinese standalone batteries cycled an average of 299 times in 2025 against international best practice of around 350, and co-located batteries just 199 times.
Why the midday number matters more than the daily average
Solar met over a quarter of global electricity demand between 11:00 and 14:00 on the average day in H1 2026, and close to nothing between 20:00 and 05:00. In mature markets the gap is starker still: solar covered 71% of Chilean demand at noon, 58% of Dutch demand at 13:00 and 55% of German demand at noon, then fell to zero by 21:00.
The consequence shows up as strain. India's fossil generation at 13:00 fell to 125 GW in H1 2026, about 10 GW below the same hour in H1 2023, while evening and overnight fossil output rose 22 GW to average 168 GW. Coal ramps down at midday and back up at dusk, a swing of nearly 50 GW between the 13:00 low and the 19:00 peak. In the EU, midday fossil output fell 16 GW between H1 2023 and H1 2026 while the evening peak fell only 5 GW.
Global solar generation growth slowed to 18% in H1 2026, below 20% for the first time this decade. Ember's reading is that saturated middays, not weak demand for solar, are the constraint — and that storage is what removes it.
What a 10% global share means for a rooftop in Dubai
None of these global averages set your bill. What they do is tell you which way equipment prices and product design are moving over the next few years.
- Batteries are getting cheap faster than most quotes assume. An installed cost of USD 140/kWh at utility scale in 2025 is not the price of a residential cabinet, which carries enclosure, inverter and installation on top. But the direction is unambiguous, and a hybrid inverter installed today keeps the option open. Check what hybrid-capable inverters your contractor is quoting before you decide.
- The evening peak is where Gulf demand actually is. A UAE villa's load does not collapse at sunset — air conditioning runs into the night. That is a better match for solar-plus-storage than the European load shape these global figures are dominated by.
- Curtailment risk is a utility problem here, not yours yet. Under Shams Dubai net metering, exported units earn credit rather than being spilled. That is a genuine advantage over saturated European markets, and it is worth understanding before assuming the global storage story applies to your villa system.
- For investors, the 34% ceiling is the warning. Deploying batteries is not the same as using them. Revenue depends on market design allowing arbitrage, ancillary services and capacity payments to stack. In the GCC that is currently handled by contracted availability payments rather than merchant markets, which caps upside and removes most of the downside.
Ember's own framing is careful: batteries remove solar's daily limit, not its seasonal one. Cloudy weeks and winter lulls still need something else. But the daily limit was the binding one.
