Africa on track for a record 17 GW of solar in 2026

Ember and African Tech Futures Lab estimate Africa will install a record 17 GW of solar in 2026, up 45%, with three quarters of it distributed and uncounted.

Africa is on track to install a record 17 GW of solar in 2026, a 45% rise on 2025, according to analysis published in the first week of September 2026 by Ember and African Tech Futures Lab. Three quarters of the capacity added between 2023 and 2025 was distributed solar that official statistics do not count, so the boom is largely invisible in published national data.

How you count solar that nobody registers

The method starts from Chinese customs export data broken down by destination country. It then applies an installation rate calibrated on the European Union and five other markets, where around 73% of exported panels are installed within roughly six months of shipment. Because Chinese export data was already available to June 2026, the researchers could estimate full-year 2026 installations before any statistical agency publishes them.

This is a modelled estimate and should be read as one. Panels can sit in warehouses, be re-exported, or be installed later than the six-month window assumes. What the method does capture, and official statistics do not, is the rooftop and small commercial segment that never applies for a grid connection and therefore never enters a national register.

The distributional detail is the striking part. New solar installed in 2026 will add more than 10% to the annual electricity generation of ten countries with a combined 190 million people, including Sierra Leone at 97%, Togo at 24%, Somalia and Djibouti at 21% each, and the DRC and Comoros at 14%. In more than half of Africa's 54 countries, the rise in solar generation is expected to exceed the historic pace of electricity demand growth.

Manufacturing quadruples, but not for Africa

African PV manufacturing output is set to roughly quadruple in 2026 to around 3.5 GW as new plants come online in Egypt and Tanzania. Most of that output is destined for export to the United States rather than for African rooftops. Ninety-four per cent of panels installed across Africa are still imported from China. Manufacturing data on the continent is poorly documented by governments and largely absent from public sources, which is a second, smaller version of the same measurement problem.

Dave Jones, chief analyst at Ember, put the policy consequence plainly: "so much of this growth is hidden from view - national governments need to get better at gathering solar data." Joel Nana of African Tech Futures Lab described the shift as chaotic and disruptive, with distributed energy resources in many cases overtaking grid capacity.

The SOLTECH view

The interesting part of this report is not Africa. It is the demonstration that a continent's worth of solar can be built without appearing in any official capacity statistic, and that customs data is now a better proxy for reality than government registers.

What we would not claim: that Africa's growth rate says anything predictive about GCC demand. The driver in most African markets is the absence or unreliability of grid supply, and solar is competing with diesel gensets and with having no power at all. In the UAE the grid is reliable and cheap by comparison, so solar competes on tariff arithmetic instead. Same technology, entirely different case.
